Membership Benefits

As the state’s premier transportation advocate, Kentuckians for Better Transportation is a recognized and respected voice at the state Capitol and in Washington D.C. that brings diverse transportation modal communities together with one goal: to provide a safe, sustainable transportation network that brings economic growth and improved quality of life for all Kentucky Communities. While our membership represents over 300 companies and organizations, it is a combined voice of thousands representing all areas of transportation – Air; Highways; Safety; Rail; Public Transportation; Water and Local Roads and Streets.

Membership in the Kentuckians for Better Transportation (KBT) is one of the best professional investments companies and individuals working in or connected to the transportation industry can make. KBT has a proven track record of helping build the best education and advocacy for the transportation industry. Membership includes many benefits at the state and national level.

Education

Each year, KBT organizes and hosts the Annual Kentucky Transportation Conference, the only annual event of its kind in the Commonwealth. Held in January, the two-day event is attended by nearly 500 individuals. Legislative leaders, local elected officials, and modal representatives from across Kentucky come together to discuss issues relative to transportation infrastructure and to learn from nationally-recognized speakers.

KBT hosts a two-day Washington, D.C. Fly-In in mid-May. Participation in the Fly-In is open to all KBT members and provides members with unparalleled access to the Kentucky Congressional delegation, their staffs, and transportation officials.

KBT also hosts a Mid-Year Review in June. This event provides an opportunity to hear from Kentucky’s Transportation Cabinet Secretary and other special guests. All KBT members are invited to attend this event. Members may self-report educational opportunities for professional credits, especially through the Department of Local Government educational credit program.

In addition to our in-person events, KBT also offers many digital learning options throughout the year which can be viewed live or on-demand at your convenience. Many of KBT’s 2020 events have been moved to virtual channels due to the Coronavirus pandemic and in efforts to keep our members safe and healthy.

Advocacy

KBT advocates for a safe, sustainable transportation network at both the state and federal level. KBT has a full-time lobbying representative in Frankfort and the nation’s capital to ensure transportation has a voice in the legislative process. We maintain close relations with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to keep membership informed of actions that could impact the industry. Advocacy initiatives include securing funding for air transportation, funding Kentucky’s local road, highway and bridge network, funding for safety improvements, rail funding including at-grade rail crossings, funding for Kentucky’s public riverports, and funding for Kentucky’s public transit providers. KBT also advocates for safety initiatives including measures that limit distracted driving and encourage restraint usage in personal passenger vehicles. When needed, KBT also addresses legislation that would adversely affect the transportation industry. KBT’s Legislative policies are developed by the organization’s committees and approved by the KBT Board of Directors.

Committees

KBT has seven modal committees: Air; Highways; Safety: Rail; Public Transportation; Water and Local Streets and Roads. Individual members serve as Chairpersons or Co-Chairpersons of various modal committees that address specific issues impacting transportation. The committee structure allows for members to develop policy statements used to advocate for the association both in Frankfort and in Washington D.C. The committees meet on an as-needed basis to address specific issues of interest to association members. Participation in the committee process allows for members to find strength in numbers for their individual issues while also providing professional development and networking opportunities.

Newsletter & Member Updates

Members receive a monthly newsletter distributed by email that members can use to keep up with well researched facts, current events and happenings in the transportation industry.
